The Department of Medicine is selflessly committed to provide exceptional, professional, evidence-based and compassionate medical care to our patients. The Department also aims to educate students and trainees in the discipline and its subspecialties producing board-certified internists. The Department also advocates promotion of health through community and advocacy programs.
The Department offers expertise in Cardiology, Pulmonology, Infectious Diseases, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Oncology, Rheumatology, Hematology, Dermatology and Medical Nutrition. The Department and its members continuously collaborate with the other Departments and Ancillary Units to give best and holistic patient care.
The consultant staff are passionate and qualified teachers and mentors who are essential in the journey of medical students at the onset up until their days of clerkship. The Department has committed to lifelong learning through conducting conferences, annual post graduate courses, and memorial lectures, and workshops. The Department spearheads the Patient Doctor Course for the first year medical students. This Course introduces the freshmen to the foundations of medical professionalism as it tackles the art of medicine. Stemming from this passion, the Patient Doctor Handbook was published in 2023, as some members of the Department contributed in writing topics like Confidentiality and Data Privacy, Clinical Empathy, PMA Code of Ethics, Conflict of Interest and Medical Economics to name a few.
Clinical research is also a strength of some of the consultants, as their works are published locally and internationally. The graduates of the residency program and its current members, are leaders, not just within the UERM Community serving as administrators, but also in the various professional medical societies, including the Philippine College of Physicians. The department has trained more than 200 graduates (and counting) since 1957, and all have established careers in clinics, administration, education, or research, and some in all!
