TheI Hemodialysis Unit was officially opened to provide services to patients diagnosed to have advanced stages of kidney disease.

The RIHS Institutional Ethics Review Board was awarded Level 3 Ethics Review Committee accreditation by the Philippine National Health Research System Philippine Health Research Ethics Board.

The hospital also purchased its third laparoscopic machine: another Stryker with a 3 chip camera on its 50th anniversary.

The Section of Neuro-Visual Disorders headed by Dr. Jesus Tamesis Jr. established the Neuro-Ophthalmology Fellowship Training Program, making UERM the first institution in the Philippines to offer this specialized training.
2003
The Outpatient Clinics transformed patient care with the Clinic Genie Computerized Patient Chart System, while the hospital advanced surgical precision with a new Stryker laparoscopic tower. Dr. Miguel Mendoza’s return from Baylor University brought expertise in minimally invasive surgery, ushering in a new era of innovation.
1997
Dr. Michael Go of the Ophthalmology Department performed a pioneering phacoemulsification surgery using topical anesthesia, marking the first use of intraocular lenses (IOL) at the Center and elevating patient care for cataract surgery.
1996
UERM established the Renal Transplant Service to save lives of patients with kidney conditions.
1995
The first laparoscopy machine, a V-Meuller 1 chip camera, was purchased and it led to the possibilities of procedures such as laparoscopic cholecystectomy, hernia repair, etc. Dr. Antonio Salud, Dr. Dave Geollegue and Dr. Edgardo Cortez, three of the first laparoscopic surgeons in the Philippines, pioneered the development of these procedures.

Mr. Wilson T. Young was appointed as the Vice Chairman of the board of the Medical Center
1990
Panfilo O. Domingo, a UE alumnus with a solid background in business, was elected Chairman of the Board of Trustees. He began a three-year rehabilitation period, upgrading the whole Medical Center at a cost of more than P20 million. The Hospital then acquired a Hitachi whole body CT scanner.
1988
Dr. Rizalino Felarca and Dr. Efren Garcia brought in the first operating microscope in UERM.
That same year, the Philippine Board of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (ORL-HNS) granted the Otorhinolaryngology Department its first accreditation.
1981
We performed the country’s first Sanchez-Perez automatic cassette changer angiography, highlighting its leadership in advancing diagnostic imaging technology.
1979
The Philippines’ first CT Scan was made available at UERM, solidifying its position as a pioneer in medical technology and diagnostics in the country.
1978
UERM Obstetrics and Gynecology Department Head Dr. Herminia Baja-Panlilio introduced admission and discharge logbooks which is now a requirement of the Philippine Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology for all accredited training institutions.
1977
The Department of Clinical Neurosciences combining Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry was established by one of the country’s top neurologists, Dr. Joven Cuanang.
1973
The Philippines’ very first successful kidney transplant was performed here Performed by Dr. Enrique Ona, Dr. Ceasar Jacinto, Dr. Fred Marte and Dr. Salumbides presided over by Nephrologist Dr. Potenciano Baccay.
1972
The hospital’s Radiology Department acquired its first fluoroscopy and an X-ray, and first performed venograms and lymphangiography. In the same year, the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department began offering laparoscopic tubal ligation.
1968
UERM advances its use of minimally invasive techniques with the handover of laparoscope and hands-on training in diagnostic laparoscopy to selected members of the consultant-staff from John Hopkins Hospital.
1962
Manifesting its state-of-the-art facilities, our institution received $10,000 worth of medical equipment and book donations, as well as the hospital’s first Viso-scope from the US Agency for International Development.

The first general endotracheal anesthesia for Pediatric Surgery in the country was administered by Dr. Apolonia Encarnacion, advancing pediatric surgical care, setting new standards for safety, innovation, and healthcare excellence.

Santos, and then Secretary of Health Elpidio Valencia, who represented his father-in-law, the late President Sergio Osmeña.

Dr. Francisco Dalupan, registered the College of Medicine with the Securities and Exchange Commission as a non-stock, non-profit foundation under the name, University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center in honor of the 7th president of the Philippines, who embodied what every Filipino could be- achiever, a sovereign and a hero.
